A brief history of the village of Llansaint in the Parish of St Ishmael.

Located in a conservation area of out standing natural beauty, the picturesque village of Llansaint clusters around the central square and the ancient All Saints Church built around the 12th century. The exact date of the village is unclear but is believed to have originated around a religious community in the 5th and 6th century. There is a sign out side Chapel Apartments pointing St Ishmael 2. The Beautiful Church of St Ishmael was built in 1100AD with further additions in the 13th and 14th century. It is located on the route that the pilgrims used to visit St David's, and these pilgrims would have worshiped at St Ishmael church. Located on the hill side over looking the estuary to Llanstefan Castle on the opposite shore, St Ishmael is positioned mid way between Ferryside and Llansaint she eerily waits for her congregation to come home..more

On the beach at the foot of St Ishmael Church buried under the sand dunes are the remains of what was a thriving community. Exposed in 1896 by a ferocious storm archaeologists have determined that the community used the sea for its trade and food. They have carbon dated many artefacts from the site and have concluded that the village was probably abandoned in the 14th Century by a tsunami or terrible storm. Local mythology with some supporting evidence suggests that the survivors of this village believed to be called Hawton or Halken Church or even Llansaint migrated further up the hill away from the power of the sea to safety, and by doing so brought the fishing industry into Llansaint. Services are still held at St Ishmael today.

For hundreds of years Llansaint has relied on the abundance of fish in Carmarthen bay and especially cockles. In later years Llansaint became famous for its cockle women who would harvest the cockles on the beach and bring them back to the village by donkey to sort them. They would then be loaded on to trains at Ferryside where they would be transported nationally. In there hay day they would process 650 Tones of cockles a year.

Kidwelly 1½ miles from Llansaint has one of the most beautiful and largest Castles in Wales. Kidwelly is also an ancient town steeped in history.

If you are a historian or just fascinated in history you couldn't be in a better place.
